The Zodiac Killer is a character in the Showtime series Dexter: Original Sin.
The Zodiac Killer is based off a real life serial killer who was never truly identified. The killer was active in the 60's and possibly after that - becoming a nationwide sensation as with other major Serial Killers of the past thirty years. Unlike many of Dexter Morgan's idols, he has no idea of the identity of the killer and it's unknown if he ever intended to pursue him.
Growing up Dexter often looked at a Penthouse magazine which secretly held newspaper articles about serial killers. Among these killers was Ted Bundy, BTK and of course The Zodiac Killer. Dexter would ponder to himself if maybe one day he would have a nickname...little did he know that in 2007 he would earn the name Bay Harbor Butcher - though he preferred another name...The Dark Defender.

- Given the fact that the killer was never identified (other than some loose claims over the years) there is the possibility that he is still alive during Dexter's time and is on the loose. In fact one of the chief suspects, Arthur Leigh Allen, died in 1992 of an apparent heart failure - he was only 58 at that time. If the showrunners wanted to they could actually pit Dexter against that suspect of for the Zodiac...or create their own character to fit the mantle since regardless of who the world has claimed the killer is - he is still unknown.
- If Dexter were to encounter the Zodiac, this marks the first instance of him actually interacting with and possibly killing a real life serial killer. During Original Sin he has hallucinated the likes of John Wayne Gacy, Ed Gein and David Berkowitz and mentioned others...but he hasn't been confirmed to meet any. Many are locked up or deceased by 1991.
