Season Five is the fifth aired season in the TV series called DEXTER. Premiering on 26 September 2010, it ties in directly with the finale for Season Four. It soon introduces Julia Stiles as troubled captive, Lumen Pierce and Jonny Lee Miller as inspirational speaker and author, Jordan Chase, who harbors a dark secret.

The season focuses on how Dexter comes to terms with the aftermath of his wife's murder, along with stopping a group of serial rapists, and avoiding a corrupt cop who learns his deadly secret.

Season Five Synopsis

Crossing new ground for the series, Season Five picks up directly after the events of Season Four. The gruesome murder of his wife, Rita Morgan, leaves Dexter Morgan in a state of disbelief. After he finds his son, Harrison, sitting in a pool of blood much like himself with the murder of his own mother, he takes the crying child outside. Soon the police arrive on the scene, with one officer attempting to take his son away until Dexter's sister Debra Morgan intervenes, kneeling by her brother as she asks what happened. Dexter's response puzzles everyone, when he says, "It was me." This leads the FBI to question him in relation to Rita's murder, and Detective Joey Quinn to begin investigating Dexter in his own way.

Feeling that he is a danger to his family, Dexter decides to leave his career, sister, and son behind to start a new life without them. He sets fire to his storage unit and takes off on his boat as he reminisces about Rita. When he stops for fuel, he ends up killing a man who speaks ill of his late wife. Dexter then returns to Miami to attend Rita's funeral and resume his life.

He restarts his kill pattern with his first victim, Boyd Fowler, but little does he realize that Boyd is involved in something much bigger than just stuffing girls in barrels by himself. Dexter discovers a living prisoner in Boyd's house, who is revealed to be Lumen Pierce, a woman who was raped and tortured by not just Boyd, but by several others. Together, they look for the four more men responsible (with one mistaken man). Dexter feels that helping Lumen attain revenge might assuage the guilt he feels for his part in Arthur Mitchell killing Rita. Together, Lumen and Dexter begin to kill the men, one after the other.

A connection begins to grow between the two, as Lumen becomes the only living person to know of Dexter's true nature. She accepts and depends on him, as she grows into a killer herself. Before long, the Lumen and Dexter enter a more intimate relationship, and Dexter believes that he has finally found someone to share his work with, without having to hide his secrets.

During this time, Joey Quinn takes risks investigating Dexter. He even gets suspended after approaching Jonah Mitchell with a photo of Dexter. Although Jonah wouldn't say anything to him, Quinn saw from his face that Jonah knew Dexter. Quinn enlists the help of now ex-narcotics cop, Stan Liddy, to dig up information on Dexter in an attempt to fish out his deepest secrets. Quinn also begins to develop strong emotions for Dexter's sister, Debra Morgan. As the investigation grows further, Quinn begins to back out, not for Dexter but for his sister -- and Liddy isn't happy about this. Determined to get his job back, Liddy butts heads with Quinn and eventually takes matters into his own hands. He kidnaps Dexter to force a confession out of him regarding the suspicious footage of him and Lumen Pierce. This ends in conflict, with a struggle resulting in Liddy dying after Dexter stabs him in the chest. Unfortunately for Quinn, he becomes the prime suspect when blood is found on his shoe.

In the meantime, Dexter's sister, Debra Morgan, begins investigating a series of gruesome killings known as the Santa Muerte Case, which tests her investigative skills as well as her morals. She starts working with a fellow officer, Cira Manzon on the case, who initially proves to be a valuable asset. When Debra first confronts one of the two suspects, Carlos Fuentes, she wavers on whether or not she can shoot someone to save another's life. When she lowers her gun, the innocent man has his neck slit (although he survives) and she loses sight of Carlos. This case proves to be a strain on her, as Captain Thomas Matthews continuously belittles her on how she handles the investigation, as well as dealing with conflict with Lt. Maria LaGuerta. Ultimately, a shootout occurs during one of their stakeouts on the Fuentes brothers, resulting in the death of an innocent woman, Yasmin Aragon. Debra then faces off with Carlos Fuentes and commits her first kill of the series, by shooting him in the head. She begins to question herself afterward on why she doesn't feel bad about it.

Eventually, the police discover a link between all the missing men to Jordan Chase who is a promotional speaker that has captivated millions around the planet. Jordan proves to be an extremely dangerous man and ends up testing Dexter in the same way that his own brother did -- by kidnapping someone important to him. A tense situation leads to Jordan's eventual defeat, where Lumen finishes the job by killing Jordan herself...

The season closes out with Lumen's urge to kill vanishing after the last death of her captors. She realizes that she can no longer stay with Dexter and, although this greatly upsets Dexter, he knows it is best for her. Dexter returns his focus to his son once again. Quinn is cleared of being a suspect due to Dexter's intervention. Quinn thanks him and discontinues any further scruntiny of Dexter's activities. The last scene is at Harrison's birthday party where everyone is reunited, and Dexter declares that he's ready to move on. His last words are, "Wishes are for children."
