Sam (Zoologist) is a character in the Showtime special event series Dexter: New Blood.

He presents heat signature footage of Matt Caldwell and another person in the woods.

"Smoke Signals"

At the police station, Jim (Dexter) asks Esther, the dispatcher, if Angela is around. He's told that she's in the conference room because Reservation Land Management has footage of Matt Caldwell shooting the deer. Alarmed, Dexter asks, "Footage?" Esther remarks, "Who knew there were cameras out there?" I sure didn't, Dexter thought, replying, "Huh." Esther jokingly asks, "What do they even need them for? I mean, we know how deer mate."

Angela calls Dexter into the conference room where an unknown man is waiting with Sergeant Logan, Officer Teddy Reed, and Kurt Caldwell. She introduces the man as Sam from Land and Wildlife Management. Great. I'm gonna be brought down by three small-town cops...and a zoologist, Dexter thought.

Angela asks Jim to "clear something up' and he warily replies, "I’m happy to." Sam turns on a screen showing heat signature footage of someone in the woods. Teddy thinks it is "pretty cool.' Dexter agrees and exhales.

Sam pauses the footage and Angela asks Jim if it looks like the rifle he sold to Matt. Dexter approaches the screen and says, "Uh... I'm guessing it's a... Modern Outfitters MC with... what looks like a very distinctive Leupold scope. It's just like the one I sold Matt."

Angela says it confirms Matt shot the deer. Kurt retorts that it gets them no closer to finding him. Sam says they found something else and shows additional footage, explaining, "From the next quadrant over, about 20 seconds earlier. He's heading for the same spot as the first guy." Kurt states, “There's someone else in the woods. We need the angle that shows where they went.” Sam, though, says there is a blind spot, Kurt angrily asks, "Blind spot? Why is there a fucking blind spot?" Sam clarifies that this system is set up for animal tracking, not crime surveillance and there will be tons of blind spots. Kurt swears.

Angela orders Teddy to contact tribal police, call Albany to get CSI, and secure the crime scene ASAP. Kurt points his finger at Angela, shouting, "You had no idea there were cameras all over your people's lands. You've been treating this like it's some kind of goddamn missing persons case, and, the whole time, you had a suspect under your fucking nose?" Angela responds sternly, "That's the way these things work, Kurt. We find new evidence. Things change. Now it's a criminal investigation."

Logan promises Kurt that they will find the guy in the footage. Dexter suggests, "You could check hunting licenses. We sell 'em at the store. I can make a list." Which I won't be on. Angela instructs Logan to interview everyone who came in contact with Matt in the 48 hours before he disappeared, since he wasn't out there alone.
