Summary[]

“It’s Alive!”

A dead body is found by a boat tour guide lying on the rocks of a breakwater. Dexter and the homicide team arrive to investigate, having to climb down the rocks to reach the victim, identified as Rafael Arenas.

Angel: “We got multiple chop wounds, pretty much head to toe.”
Vince: “I got sharp-force trauma here, heavy-impact, parallel wounds -- maybe an ax.”
Dexter: “No, the defense wounds on the forearms are long and linear, and I can make out beveled margins. A machete did this.”
Doakes: “The machete is the weapon of choice of the 29th Street Kings. The victim was in the gang, judging from that tattoo.”
Angel: “We think the body was carried from a nearby location. I found a real good blood trail coming down from the road.”

Dexter fumbles with the lens of his camera (still affected from killing his brother), which Batista notices.

Doakes: “Just make sure we check the dock slips for criminal records. It's possible this victim was killed by one of these boat owners out here.”
Dexter: “Or maybe it was just an easy access spot to dump a corpse at night. There are no light poles. The freeway exit ramp is just a block away.”
Angel: “He's got a point.”
Vince: “Yo, Dex.” [noticing Dexter standing in blood]
Doakes: [to Dexter] “You're supposed to preserve the crime scene, asshole.”
Angel: [to Dexter] “Man, what's the matter with you today?”
Dexter: “Just a little off my game. I'll get it back.”

Nearby, Debra interviews the Banana Boat tour guide. The man found the body at 7:00 A.M. and he saw no other people in the area.

A guy in the crowd recognizes Debra from the news as the Ice Truck Killer’s girlfriend. He keeps nagging her to act scared so that he can take her photo. Just as Debra is about to explode, she calms down, smiles, and waves at him.

Suddenly, Eva Arenas, the grief-stricken mother of Rafael, runs past the cops and climbs down onto the rocks. Dexter grabs her and, in Spanish, Eva begs him to find her son's murderer and kill him like a dog. LaGuerta leads Eva away, while talking to her in Spanish. Eva’s young daughter runs over and hugs her mother. Dexter watches the girl’s face, and thought, That look. I know that look. Like her mother, she wants someone to do something.
