Rita’s Social Worker is a character in Season One of the Showtime series DEXTER.
She follows up on Rita Bennett’s domestic abuse case.
Summary[]
Dexter is reading Jeremy Downs’ file while working out on his exercise bike when Rita Bennett calls him from a bus stop. She isn’t sure if she will be home by 4:00 pm to greet the case worker that is coming by. Rita asks if he can wait at her house until she gets there. She doesn’t need him, though, to pick up the kids from school since Colleen is taking Cody to his karate lessons and Jen has Astor’s piano lessons covered. Dexter tells her not to worry.
The social worker and Dexter are talking outside Rita’s house, still waiting for her. Dexter assures her that Rita is usually home in time for the kids and he’s just backup. He remarks that the bus must be late. The case worker says, according to Rita’s file, she has personal transportation. Dexter states that she did, and will again very soon. The social worker says it’s nothing to worry about, but she has to make a note of it. She tells Dexter that Rita is, in fact, doing an exemplary job and she wishes all her home visits were this lovely. Dexter asks why then does she keeps coming around. She explains that its routine followup for all domestic violence cases to make sure a stable home environment exists.
While they continue to wait, Dexter tells the social worker that the system does work at times as he was taken in by a wonderful, non-abusive family. He adds that his foster father understood he had “special needs.” She says he was lucky. Just then, Rita comes running up the sidewalk, announcing, “I’m here!” She apologizes to the social worker and they go inside the house. Dexter remains outside, feeling appreciative of having been taught the Code.
