Paul’s Attorney is a character in Season One of the Showtime series DEXTER.
She conducts the deposition in which Rita Bennett reveals that she violated her custody agreement with Paul Bennett.
History[]
After returning from a trip with Dexter Morgan, Rita defends herself from being raped by knocking out her ex-husband. The next day, she is told by a county sheriff that Paul is pressing assault charges against her. She meets with a lawyer recommended by Dexter at her house. The lawyer informs Rita that because she invited Paul into her bedroom, she cannot prove her actual intent was to defuse the situation.
Summary[]
Rita, Dexter, Rita’s lawyer, Paul’s attorney, and a court reporter are present at the deposition. For the final question, Rita is asked, “Did you leave town with your boyfriend last weekend?” Rita says she did because Dexter’s father died. The attorney asks if Paul had a scheduled visitation at the time and if he gave permission. Rita defends herself as being the custodial parent and the one who gave Paul visitation. Rita’s lawyer realizes this admission is a problem and asks to speak with his client. He asks Rita why she didn’t tell him about breaking a visitation agreement, but she didn’t know it was a big deal.
The hearing closes with Paul’s attorney saying she will get to unanswered questions at the psychiatric evaluation on Wednesday. Rita is taken aback, not having been told she needs one. Her lawyer says it’s mandatory in these type of cases to determine whether to hold a competency hearing. Rita doesn’t understand why she needs to have a psychiatric evaluation when Paul is the ex-con. Her lawyer explains that Paul has a strong case because she violated a custody agreement and struck him in her bedroom. Dexter begins to realize that Rita could actually lose her kids.
