Messenger is a character in Season One of the Showtime series DEXTER.

He delivers a registered letter to a skeptical Dexter Morgan about the death of his biological father.

Summary[]

Debra and Dexter are in the homicide department, and she’s trying to convince him to go on a double date with her new boyfriend, Rudy. She says he makes her feel safe and she’s falling for him. Nearby, a messenger carrying an manila envelope addresses a man on a phone.

Messenger: “Excuse me. Where can I find Dexter Morgan?”
Dexter: “Right here.”
Messenger: “Oh, that was easy.”

Dexter signs for the letter and Debra grabs it.

Debra: “An urgent registered letter? Maybe you won a sweepstakes.”

Just then, Angel Batista asks to speak with Dexter privately. He inquires about the blood report for the Bayard Shooting and Dexter gives it to him. When Dexter walks back over to Debra, she has already opened the letter.

Dexter: [to Debra] “You know, it's a federal offense to read someone else's mail.”
Debra: “‘We regret to inform you of the death of your father’? Dad died 10 years ago.”

Dexter takes the letter from her and begins to read it.

Dexter: “This isn't about Harry. ‘Joseph Driscoll of Dade City, Florida, names his son, Dexter Morgan of Miami, as his executer.’ It's a will.”
Debra: “Well, he can't be your biological father. Dad said he died before you came to live with us. He wouldn't make a mistake like that.”
Dexter: “‘The body's awaiting cremation while they notify the next of kin.’”
Debra: “Hey. I'm your only next of kin. Don't you fucking forget it.”
Dexter: [as Deb walks away] “Oh, and I inherited a house.”

I know the truth, Dexter thought, because Harry always told me the truth. He had to. He was teaching me principles, a code. He knew what I would become without it. So Joseph Driscoll of Dade City must have been mistaken.
