Leon Prater's Trophy Collection is a unique and highly prolific selection of serial killer trophies and evidence featured in the Showtime original series Dexter: Resurrection.

Leon Prater is a billionaire venture capitalist with a unique obsession - he's a "huge fan" of serial killers and with his vast wealth he has acquired pieces from many of the most prolific serial killers across the world. The pieces themselves consist of crime scene evidence all the way up to actual trophies from the killer themselves, all organized throughout a large vault located in the penthouse of his Mansion. The vault itself is protected by five inches of solid steel behind limestone and a security system that means one wrong keypad entry triggers the alarms (and immediate response of Charley or his security to kill the intruder at their leisure). The code is 82661934, the inmate number of Cooper Morris, the man who had killed Prater's parents and triggered his fascination with serial killers.

As part of the promotion for Resurrection, Showtime has created a interactive website in Leon Prater's Vault to explore the collection - allowing fans a chance to see deeper into the vault than what was revealed thus far within the television series.

History[]

At some unknown point in time Leon Prater developed an immense fascination with serial killers developed into the collection seen today. Over time he added pieces from some of the most prolific serial killers such as John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, Richard Ramirez, Edmund Kemper, and David Berkowitz. In addition to those infamous names he was able to acquire items related to The Trinity Killer, The Ice Truck Killer and The Bay Harbor Butcher which showed his access even extended to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Some time in the 2010's Prater decided to start hosting "Gatherings" where he would invite serial killers to his mansion with the promise of friendship and a chance to interact with like-minded individuals. In addition to this invite Prater's fascination with trophies insists on at least one being parted with upon their first meeting, with the piece being added to the collection alongside the other killers. If the serial killer is inclined to Prater will pay for each trophy and add as many as they are willing to part with to his collection - however he is most interested in "fresh" trophies, insisting that during these gatherings at least one killer reveal their process and next intended target to the rest of the group - desiring the trophy from that kill and sharing in the killer's own desire.

In March of 2022, Prater's right-hand woman Charley researches The Dark Passenger, a new serial killer in New York City who has claimed at least 12 victims. When she sees Ronald Schmidt leave his apartment building, wearing his usual outfit which conceals his identity, she makes her way inside and finds Ronald Schmidt's Apartment. After a thorough search she locates his trophy collection and leaves a box of money (which act as an advance on "Show-and-Tell" during the Gatherings) as well as an envelope containing an invitation to meet. As Charley had not actually seen Schmidt's face due to the fact that he lacks any sort of online presence, when Dexter Morgan later kills Schmidt and assumes his identity as "Red", he is able to accept the invitation on his behalf and enter Leon Prater's Manor.

When he meets with Prater, who expresses his delight in having finally "matched the face to the name", he leads him to the wine-room of his manor where Charley takes her leave. Unlike Prater, Charley has an immense distaste for trophies and doesn't like to be present for the next part: a tour of his vault. Prater goes to a bottle on the wine rack and removes it, asking "Red" to press a button which causes the wine racks to recede revealing a large, solid steel door. "I want to show you...one of my deepest passions" - Prater moves forward and enters a code on a keypad to unlock the door which opens automatically revealing a large vault inside - with the very first thing Dexter notices being a clown suit mounted on a mannequin (which Dexter remarks "Clowns?"). Prater smiles and says "Pogo the Clown" which causes Dexter's expression to switch to awe as he realizes this costume belonged to John Wayne Gacy. As he examines the outfit he notices the bloody fridge of Jeffrey Dahmer and he turns to look at Prater.

"You really like serial killers."
"I pride myself on finding the best of the best in every field, so... why not Death? Death is such a natural, necessary part of life. Every second millions of cells die shedding die. Shedding diseased parts of ourselves to make room for new cells. Rebirth. Growth. Life. A million little deaths that keep us healthy.
"

Prater then shows him a hooked weapon belong to that of the New York Ripper, which he tells him that he terrorized the streets he grew up on as a child and was never caught. Several other killers trophies, evidence and memorabilia are shown while Dexter scans the room appreciating how these items are celebrated and not treated with disgust. Prater then says "Arthur Mitchell - the Infamous Trinity Killer" which catches his attention and Dexter moves over to examine a shiny hammer (similar to the one Dexter used to kill Arthur himself, and the one that Arthur used to kill the 'fathers' in his cycle) placed above the Brooklyn Thrill Killers's brass knuckles. He remarks that it's a bit of a misnomer, saying that he actually killed in fours.

He then tells Dexter that he "bought these from an FBI agent with a gambling problem" and he turns on the lights revealing one of Dexter's Blood Slide Boxes, in particular the box that was seized as evidence in the Bay Harbor Butcher Case. Dexter, overwhelmed by seeing his "old friends", moves over to it and runs his fingers along the top of the blood slides - prompting Prater to ask that he please not touch (which causes Dexter to apologize - though the trophies rightfully belong to him). Dexter can't help but smile, beginning to chuckle as he takes everything in - "it's quite the collection" and Prater replies "An ever-expanding collection". He then moves over to the next piece and says it's the table where the Ice Truck Killer took his own life. Dexter's expression drops as he's reminded of the decision he had to make in killing his brother - which Prater says that had he someone like them, someone to talk to, that maybe he would be with them here today. Dexter remarks internally that it was doubtful...regardless of being his brother, Dexter had to protect his sister Debra Morgan and couldn't chance Brian's obsession with him leading to her death.

Prater then points out the "gifts" from the serial killer Rapunzel and that he would get to meet him tonight, along with another serial killer known as the Tattoo Collector when he shows off the skinned tattoo arm-sleeve and two other pieces in the mantle. He then tells him that he's "reserved a spot" for him to be among his collection, walking over to an adjacent set of trophies featuring both Lady Vengeance and The Gemini Killer. Between them sits a spot for the Dark Passenger, which he says if he's willing to part with a trophy it would be placed here. Dexter then pulls out the license of Tyler Day, Schmidt's first victim and hands it to Prater who takes it with a cloth to, feeling honored to have it. He places the license in the slot provided and admires it for a moment.

Dexter asks how his other guests might feel with all this evidence being one place like this. Prater smiles and says that they trust him, as well as five inches of solid steel behind limestone. He then walks over to the keypad and demonstrates that one wrong entry will result in the immediate entry of Charley or other security who will eliminate the intruder on sight. He then shuts down the alarms and asks that security be told to stand down, which Charley relays over the radio.

"Like I said, your secrets are safe with me"

After learning of Dexter's true identity from Angel Batista, Prater lures him to the vault where he reveals his knowledge. Excited to have the real Bay Harbor Butcher in his grasp, Prater offers to become Dexter's benefactor, luring serial killers in for Dexter, but he has to kill Batista who has been strapped down to the Ice Truck Killer's table. Dexter considers going through with it, but instead cuts Batista loose who attacks and tries to strangle Dexter to death, only to be fatally shot by Prater. Prater and Charley flee the vault with Dexter chasing after them, throwing the Axeman of New Orleans' hatchet at them. However, Prater and Charley escape, locking Dexter in the vault with Batista.

Prater decides to leave Dexter in the vault to die while Dexter frantically searches for a way out, briefly hallucinating Brian Moser. A phone call from Joey Quinn leads Dexter to Batista's belongings which were left in the vault, including Batista's cell phone. Dexter calls Harrison for help, guiding him through the manor to the penthouse and blackmailing Charley into leaving Harrison alone. Dexter discovers Prater's serial killer files in the unlabeled drawers in the vault and deduces that the vault's code is 82661934, the inmate number of Cooper Morris, the serial killer who had started Prater's fascination. Dexter is able to provide Harrison with the code just before the battery on Batista's phone dies. Before Dexter leaves, he recovers his Blood Slide Box -- which is rightfully Dexter's -- and takes most of Prater's serial killer files.

However, Prater captures Harrison and forces Dexter to return to the penthouse where he intends to kill the father and son outside of the vault. Harrison is able to subdue Prater with M99 and escapes as Dexter straps the billionare to the kill table in the middle of his own vault, ultimately killing Prater. Dexter then chops up Prater's body, returns the trophies to their rightful places, wipes down his fingerprints and purposefully triggers the alarm to draw the attention of the cops attending the 10th Annual Gala downstairs before escaping via the elevator leading to the garage.

"Time for the world to see the real Leon Prater."

The cops, including Detectives Claudette Wallace and Melvin Oliva, discover the vault and the truth about Prater. Batista's body is recovered along with the murder weapon bearing Prater's fingerprints. Wallace and Oliva discover the New York Ripper's murder weapon and his file which reveals that the elusive serial killer's real name is Don Framt.

The Collection[]

Prater, through his immense wealth, has been able to track down and acquire objects that belonged to Serial Killers. These items range from the most well known real-life serial killers to some of Dexter Morgan's adversaries and even one of his own Blood Slide Boxes. They're arranged in a six-room vault that extends to the left upon entry.

Below is information sourced from both the television show and the website for "Leon Prater's Vault"[1]. Transcripts from the website have been provided below for each killer they're currently present for and other killers have been formatted according to real life information or information from the Dexter franchise itself:

List of Killers in the Collection[]

There are a total of 78 Killers (65 in the vault, 13 more shown within Leon Prater's Files) with evidence or trophies within the six room collection. Grouped killers are considered 1, regardless of accomplices or otherwise. Below is a direct list of the killers, followed by break downs per room of the items, their locations and any information provided about the killers.

NOTE IN REGARD TO REAL LIFE SERIAL KILLERS: If a page has not yet been created for a real life serial killer, feel free to create one yourself and utilize a template from someone like John Wayne Gacy when inputting information. Their real life murder counts and fates are still considered "canon" to this show unless otherwise stated (i.e. if Dexter encounters them somehow between Original Sin and Resurrection as an example) so you're free to deep dive those real life serial killers and build those pages up as you please. As always...vandalism won't be tolerated however, so keep it clean and as in-universe if you can. Any references made to these characters throughout the franchise can also be included when you're building those pages.

Notes[]

  • So far each of the serial killers are identified either via their moniker or their real name with each item in his collection and each of these are shown in the virtual tour via the showtime website - except for one: the chainsaw in Room 2 next to the Ice Truck Killer's table. While there is a plaque that can be seen on the pedestal in the show, the virtual tour does not address this nor are plaques visible on the pedestals to identity it.
    • The full nameplate is revealed during the 9th episode when Dexter frees Batista from the table. The chainsaw belonged to Max Bernard Franc, the "Chainsaw Professor".
  • At least one plaque is incorrect, which would reference James Doakes as the Bay Harbor Butcher though at the time Prater is unaware of this fact (and that "Red" is the actual butcher).
    • He does however note this error when he learns that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher and asks him how it feels to have all that stolen glory from his kills.
  • Several of Dexter's adversaries have places in this collection including Arthur Mitchell, Travis Marshall, and his brother Brian Moser.
  • Surprisingly there are no trophies or murder tools for the following major killers across the franchise:
  • It may be that the above killers he just hasn't acquired the trophies yet, as it is an "ever expanding collection". In the case of some of the above killers, they weren't indicated to collect trophies.
    • In the case of Walter Kenney, Dexter himself had disposed of his trophies years before and had personally killed him and disguised the kill as a heart attack by smothering him to death, ensuring he died as a regular old man without his legacy as a serial killer being revealed.
    • Joe Jensen was never indicated to have taken trophies, instead putting that 'Bobby' was at fault for his murders.
    • Jordan Chase's only trophy was the vial of blood from the Barrel Girl Gang's first victim. As well as that, Dexter had killed the majority of the Barrel Girl Gang, with Lumen Pierce having killed Jordan and Alex Tilden, and even during Miami Metro's investigation into them, there was nothing mentioned about the trophies of the Gang aside from the videos of their crimes.
    • Wayne Randall and Hannah McKay's trophies are still in possession of Miami Metro as far as is known.
    • Kurt Caldwell's trophies were not mentioned after the events of New Blood, and as they were embalmed corpses, it would be quite difficult for Prater to acquire any of them.
    • Levi Reed was never shown to have taken any trophies from his kills.
    • While George King did skin his victims, he was never shown to have kept the skins as trophies and it is unclear if he took anything as a trophy, as he was in denial that he was actually a serial killer due to his need for respect.
    • The Fuentes brothers only took money from their victims and used that to fund their partying lifestyle. As well as this, they've not been mentioned since Season Five after Debra killed Carlos and Marco went on the run.
    • Oliver Saxon's trophies were the recordings he took of his murders, as well as the scooped brain matter he would send his mother as a taunting message, and were not mentioned after Season Eight.
  • Travis Marshall's birthdate is incorrect on the official website listing it as November 24th, 1946 which would make him Professor Gellar's age during Season Six. His actual birthyear is 1977.
