L. Smith, M.D. is a character in Season One of the Showtime series DEXTER.
He’s a resident physician who attends to young Dexter Morgan after he suffers a severe injury and is admitted to the hospital. The doctor is seen only in flashbacks.
Summary[]
Young Dexter is admitted to the hospital and must undergo surgery when he injures himself when trying to retrieve Debra's ball.
In the Hospital[]
(Flashback)
Dr. Smith: “Run another I.V. Let’s keep his blood levels volumized.”
Nurse 1: “What’s his pressure?"
Nurse 2: “It’s 80 and dropping.”
Dr. Smith: “We may need to do a belly tap.”
Harry: (upon arriving) “Hey, Dex. Buddy, I’m here.”
Dexter: “It hurts, dad.”
Harry: “What happened?”
Doris: “He tried to climb a fence to get Debra’s ball, but a dog chased after him, and he fell on a wrought-iron post.”
Harry: (to doctor) “Is he gonna be alright?”
Dr. Smith: “We can keep him stable for awhile. But he’s gonna need surgery to repair some internal bleeding, and that’s a problem.”
Harry: “Can we talk over here, please? Dex, I’ll be right back.”
Doris: (to Debra) “Hold your brother’s hand, sweetie,”
The doctor, Harry, and Doris walk to another room to talk as Dexter watches them through a window.
Dr. Smith: “Okay, the complication is with your son’s blood type.”
Harry: (to Doris) “I don’t want to talk about this.”
Doris: “Why are being like this?”
Harry: “You don’t need to mention that in front of anybody.”
Doris: “Are you crazy?! He could die. You’ve got to do something please.”
Before Surgery[]
(Flashback)
Dr. Smith: (to Dexter) “Don’t you worry little man. You’re not gonna feel a thing.”
Dexter: “I thought there was a problem, you know -- the blood?”
Dr. Smith: “Your dad fixed it. See, you have a very special blood type -- AB Negative. It’s hard to come by, and our supply was low. But your dad knew somebody with blood just like yours. You’re very lucky.”
Harry: “Can I have a moment with my son?”
Dr. Smith: “Yeah.”
Harry: “Hey, Dex. Everything’s gonna be fine. You’ll be as good as new.”
Dexter: “I will?”
Harry: “Hey, would I lie to you?”
(Years later, Dexter discovers that Harry did lie to him -- about his bio parents.)
After Surgery[]
(Flashback)
After Dexter's successful surgery, Harry finds him coloring a thank-you card for the unknown person who donated his blood. Harry promises Dexter that he'll make sure the man receives it.
