Summary[]
Just like he used to do in Miami, Dexter arrives at work with a box of pastries. His boss, Fred Jr., gratefully takes a strawberry cream cheese sweet roll. He informs "Jim" that it will be a "stress-y kind of week" because not only are he and Brian adopting a dog, but they disagree on what to name it. Brian wants to call him Garfield, but Fred Jr. doesn’t think a cat's name is appropriate. He shows Dexter a photo of the pup and asks if he looks more like a Gromit. Dexter says, "On this one, I think I'm basically Switzerland." Fred Jr. chuckles and calls him a smart man.
The next day, Fred Jr. tells Dexter that Matt Caldwell's background check has cleared and he wants his gun dropped off at his dad's lodge. Dexter doesn't approve of Matt having it and asks, "Should we really sell him that gun?" Fred Jr. replies, "Nine grand? Uh, yeah. It's called commerce. I'm into it. Plus, Matt's dad's been a real friend to us for years, so.…" Dexter says he's not comfortable delivering the gun and asks Fred Jr. to do it. However, he can't, explaining, "Brian and I are picking up Garfield. Yeah, I lost the name battle. Happy husband, happy life. Jimmy, I really need you to deliver this gun." Dexter reluctantly does as he's instructed.
After Matt Caldwell goes missing, the search team sets up a base camp outside Dexter's cabin. Fred Jr. tells Dexter that the store will be closed for the day, but if anybody needs supplies, he's free to make a run.
Later, after Dexter plants Matt's glove near a highway, Fred Jr. discovers it. He runs back to the officers, shouting, "Oh, my God! I just found this about a mile down the trail, right before I got to the…" Angela interjects with "highway." Dexter thinks, Thank you, Fred Jr. You magnificent outdoorsman. Sergeant Logan says it's possible that someone else dropped it, but Fred Jr. confirms that Matt had gloves like that when he was in the store.
Dexter needs a place to dispose of Matt Caldwell's body. There are no customers in the store so he drinks coffee while he scrutinizes a map of the area. Fuck. So, Matt, once again... what to do with you. The old iron mine. It's remote, plenty big, filled with tunnels. Goldilocks, I think it's just right. When "Jim" asks his boss if he can leave to join the search, Fred Jr. says, "I was just about to suggest that myself." Dexter picks up the map and leaves as Fred Jr. eats candy from a jar.
In the store, Fred Jr. is showing his new puppy to "Jim" but it keeps struggling and yelping. Fred Jr. doesn't understand why because he's usually very friendly. "Maybe he can smell my goats," Dexter suggests. Fred Jr. says, "I think he's just aggressive because he hates his name. I don't know. I'm new at this. Maybe I got to go empty the dog. Okay. I'll be back. Come on, Garfield." As soon as he leaves, Dexter is alerted of the school lockdown.
Molly meets Angela to talk to her at the tavern. Angela opens up about how she was supposed to go with Iris that day she went missing. Angela admits that Jim (Dexter) followed Molly that day because he overheard her conversation with Kurt about Matt, but Molly says that Dexter wasn’t sitting anywhere near Molly and Kurt. She asks Angela if she can hear Fred Jr. and Brian arguing at the bar. Molly suspects Jim was recording her and Kurt because he was charging his phone at the bar. Angela grows more suspicious of Dexter.
People from the town of Iron Lake help Jim (Dexter) sift through his burned belongings. Fred Jr. and Pastor Brian are there, holding Garfield, their dog. Dexter appreciates the help from the "good folks", while silently referring to himself as "Mr. Serial Killer." Angela tells Dexter there is evidence that it was arson, which makes his cabin a crime scene.
