Coral Island Retirement Village

Walter Kenney's Room is a location in Season Six of the Showtime series’s DEXTER.

It’s the lodging of Walter Kenney, an elderly serial killer.

Address[]

Coral Island Retirement Village - Room B-72
Miami, FL

Summary[]

The murder of a prostitute, Rosalia Davalos, reminds Dexter of the work of a legendary Oregon serial killer nicknamed "The Tooth Fairy Killer." His M.O. included pulling teeth from his victims. The killer would be an old man by now, but Dexter wonders if perhaps he came out of retirement for one last kill.

Dexter visits the Coral Island Retirement Village which is one block away from the crime scene, under the pretense of looking for a place for his 81-year-old father to live. He asks the receptionist if there are any residents from Oregon (the Tooth Fairy Killer's old stalking grounds). When the she goes off to fetch him a mug of coffee, Dexter checks her computer files. He finds three residents from Oregon -- a woman, a man in a wheelchair, and another man. His name is Walter Kenney and seems the obvious suspect.

Dexter (under the alias “Dan”) first joins Walter on the golf course, and later at the pool, where he notices that Walter is missing a tooth - the same lateral incisor he pulled from his victims.

The next day, Dexter returns to Coral Island Village at 9:00 a.m. to help Walter run his errands. Walter answers the door in his underwear and goes off to get dressed. While waiting, Dexter looks around, criticizing the room in his head. While checking out a photo of Walter and his son, Walter returns, now dressed, and calls his son an "ungrateful little prick."

Dexter drives Walter around, picking up medicine and porno magazines for him. Then, at Walter’s request, drops him off at a storage facility. Nearly certain that Walter is the killer, Dexter later breaks into his storage unit. His suspicions are confirmed when he finds a box of teeth, clearly Walter’s trophies.

Walter soon discovers Dexter’s true identity and that he works for Miami Metro Homicide. That night, he tricks Dexter into thinking he is lost and needs help. When Dexter picks him up, Walter holds a gun to his head, planning to kill him. However, Dexter deliberately crashes his car and is able to capture Walter.

Dexter takes Walter back to his room and straps him to his recliner. Now caught and tied down, Walter begins to brag and laugh about his kills. He compares his ritual of taking teeth to Dexter’s blood slides. Walter warns Dexter that he will end up like him.

As he is about to die, Walter expresses his excitement that his son will find out he is The Tooth Fairy Killer. Dexter pauses, thinking of his own son. He decides to destroy Walter’s legacy and hide the truth. He suffocates an angry Walter, making it appear that he died of a heart attack. Walter is last seen on a gurney as he is taken away by paramedics and loaded into an ambulance. Dexter dumps his teeth into the ocean.

Quotes[]

  • “They say old age is like a second childhood. There are primary colors...tricycles...and ball chasing. I barely made it through my first childhood. I guess no one makes it through the second.” ~Dexter
  • “TV, Barcalounger, and a view of the parking lot. This wasn’t on the Coral Island brochure.” ~Dexter (describing Walter’s room)
  • “Well, I’m very fucking sorry to let you down. Does that mean you don’t want my autograph?” ~Walter (to Dexter)
  • “You’re kidding yourself, asshole. All I ever cared about was killing, and I can’t even do that right anymore. That’s what you’ve got to look forward to. This is your future, and it includes adult fucking diapers!” ~Walter (to Dexter)
