A revival of Dexter premiered on 7 November 2021. The revival was originally announced by Showtime on 14 October 2020.[1] Production began in early 2021 ahead of a fall premiere.
The ten-episode special event series brought back both Michael C. Hall and original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who exited Dexter after Season Four.
Dexter: New Blood, developed by Clyde Phillips, is based on the Dexter Novels by Jeff Lindsay.
Phillips stated that this revival isn't intended to act as Season 9; instead, it will allow showrunners "to write a second finale." While Phillips said this is a chance to correct some aspects of Dexter's final episode, showrunners don't plan on retconning the original Season 8 finale.
In a live interview with Phil Williams on Times Radio, Michael C. Hall revealed that the series will premiere in the U.S. on Showtime on Sunday, 7 November 2021. When Williams asked Hall if there will be more episodes for the revival, he replied: "I'm going to say... maybe." [2]
On Sunday, 25 July 2021, Dexter returned at San Diego Comic-Con for a virtual panel featuring Michael C Hall, showrunner Clyde Phillips, Scott Reynolds, Marcos Siega, and Julia Jones who plays Angela Bishop in the new series. The first trailer is titled "Dexter: New Blood" and dropped during the time slot. [3]
Details[]
Set ten years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, he is now living under an assumed name in Upstate New York, far from his original home in Miami. The ending of the show will have no resemblance to the original finale. [4]
New Blood premiered on November 7, 2021.
Dexter: New Blood was filmed in Massachusetts, primarily west of I-495 in local towns and cities including Gardner, Lancaster, Sterling, and Worcester. [5] Production began in February 2021 [6] and ended 30 July 2021.
Official Summary[]
On 8 October 2021, Showtime released an official summary for Dexter: New Blood:
"The world at large believes Dexter Morgan died in a tragic boating accident, and in a way the world at large isn’t wrong. Far from the life he knew, living under a false name in the small town of Iron Lake, NY, he’s successfully tamped down his Dark Passenger for nearly 10 years. With a normal job and a Chief of Police girlfriend, it seems he’s got life under control – until his son shows up and turns his world upside down. Rattled, Dexter yields to his homicidal urges and soon finds himself on a collision course with a very dangerous local."

Prequel, Sequel, Spin-Offs[]
As of February 2023, Chris McCarthy, the Paramount Global exec who was handed oversight of Showtime last year, has ordered a prequel series that will tell the origin story of Michael C. Hall’s serial killer drama that first bowed on Showtime in 2006 and was part of a wave of anti-heroes that captivated viewers. Showtime revived Dexter with a sequel series, New Blood that helped repair the legacy of the series after its original finale was widely considered one of the worst in television history. New Blood went on to become a ratings and streaming success for Showtime. Also as part of the larger plan to lean into the Dexter franchise, Showtime is also exploring other spinoffs that trace the back stories of some of the show’s most iconic characters. This includes John Lithgow’s memorable Trinity Killer. Dexter creator Clyde Phillips who was behind New Blood and served as showrunner on the first four seasons (which included the Trinity one), will oversee the franchise for Showtime.
New Blood, Season 2[]
Summary with Spoilers
After killing his own father, Harrison gets lost in the crowds in New York City, trying to find himself. This new chapter of his life includes a "violent romance" and an "unusual new mentor" (gender or age not specified), while attending New York University.
Harrison carries the dark passenger of his father Dexter, but also has a strong sense of morality. Harrison will give in to his inherited killer impulses, but with a code "of his own". [14]
