Dexter Morgan:

Dexter Morgan: Forensics Intern and Fledgling Serial Killer

Dexter Morgan is the main protagonist of the Showtime series Dexter: Original Sin. He is also the title character in the Showtime original series DEXTER, Dexter Novels and the broader DEXTER Television Franchise as a whole serving as the Main Protagonist in four different shows.

Dexter in Original Sin is a Forensic Intern working under CSI Chief Tanya Martin and works alongside his father Sergeant-Detective Original Sin in Miami Metro Homicide. He has just started his second life - that of a Serial Killer and has currently amassed Four Kills (directly, one additional Indirect for a total of Five Deaths connected to Dexter).

By the end of Original Sin: Season One Dexter is promoted to a full time position in Miami Metro Forensics becoming the official "number 3" of the team led by Tanya Martin, with Vince Masuka being her second in command. He has also transitioned fully into a Serial Killer, learning a majority of his techniques that would be utilized for over 23 years in Miami.

Background[]

NOTE: Addressed by the showrunners in an interview, the following events are how they actually occurred within the series canon - the flashbacks in the original show were how Dexter remembered the events but did not necessarily contain all the facts.

Birth and Early Childhood[]

Dexter Moser was born on February 1st, 1971 at 11:29 P.M. to mother Laura Moser. His father Joe Driscoll was not present at the time of his birth and he retained his mother’s last name.

Dexter grew up alongside his older brother Brian Moser whom he would often call “Biney” due to having difficulty with his words. By 1973 he had grown into a young toddler that his mother referred to as her little angel, often staying with neighbors or a babysitter while his parents sold drugs for the Estrada Organization.

Estrada Case: 1973[]

NOTE: The following section is collapsible due to current length. The contents cover the entirety of the Estrada Case storyline in the flashbacks, focusing on Dexter with necessary background elements explored.

The Miami Metro Police Department became increasingly concerned over the spread of drugs throughout Miami and the Vice Department led by Lieutenant Aaron Spencer focused their efforts on the Cartels in the area, specifically the Estrada Organization. Spencer tasked Detectives Harry Morgan and Bobby Watt with gaining a foothold in the cartel - by turning someone within the group to their side as an informant. Spencer said it was important that they chose someone they could trust - which led the detectives on a sting operation where Joe and Laura were dealing drugs. After feigning being a drug addict looking to score, Harry arrested Joe and Laura was stopped by Bobby with both of them being brought into the department. Joe was uncooperative and ultimately imprisoned with Harry deciding to try a different approach with Laura. As he questioned her he eventually noticed a bracelet made by one of her boys and he promised her that if she helped him he would take her home to her boys that day.

Later that day Harry keeps his word and drives Laura home, stepping out to assure her that she’s doing the right thing and he will keep her safe. Shortly after a young Dexter rushes down the stairs calling out “Mommy!” as he rushes into her arms. His older brother Brian remains on the porch, somewhat in the shadows as he watches Harry. Laura introduces her boys and then little Dexter who she is holding to which Harry greets him with a warm smile that causes Dexter to smile bashfully. Laura then takes Dexter inside while Brian continues his gaze at Harry, which catches him by surprise.

Summary[]

Picking up from the ending of Dexter: New Blood, a gravely wounded Dexter is shown slipping in and out of consciousness in the back seat of a police SUV which is racing down the road. As Dexter’s facing the window on the door he replays the events leading up to his injury - he was shot by his son. Harrison Morgan per his own request wanting to receive punishment for the people he’s lost along the course of his journey. Eventually the vehicle reaches a hospital and Dexter is worked on by doctors in the emergency room. Close to losing him they’re able to resuscitate his heart which retains a stable beat…then tensions relax as the doctors work on patching him up.

Dexter remarks in his mind how he’s thankful for the heartbeat and starts to experience his life again - as he says “It really is like they say - your life flashes before your eyes” and we go to the very beginning at his birth. His mother, Laura Moser strains as she gives birth to a healthy baby boy that she affectionally names Dexter.

”And in the beginning…there was blood”

DEXTER: Original Sin Season One[]

Bloodlust at a Party[]

NOTE: The following section encompasses the buildup leading into Dexter’s first kill. Collapsible for convenience.

It’s May of 1991 and Dexter Morgan can be seen standing beneath a bright light illuminating a corpse on a table. He is wearing his signature plastic-face shield but the remainder of his outfit is that worn for surgical practice. He places his hand on the corpse’s chest as an arrogant teenager in the background cracks a joke. Dexter looks at them coldly as he expresses that “I’m experiencing death…you only get one first time”. The teens continue to heckle him but Dexter’s college professor Dr. Rivas silences them, allowing Dexter to continue with his demonstration. Dexter nodded and proceeded to expertly cut open the corpse with a scalpel before he paused, wincing at the fact that there was no blood. He would then use various tools to break open the ribs and eventually pull out the heart - which he held for a moment as the students stared with unease. Later after class he was washing his hands when Dr. Rivas approached praising him for his work and that he would make an excellent surgeon - Dexter responded that after preparing so long for this moment… he didn’t feel anything from the experience. Dr. Rivas said that’s what “makes him special” and he departed…Dexter was left to lament that the autopsy did nothing for his “urges”. Some time after this Dexter would pose for his graduation photo and was told to smile - to think of something that made him happy. As it just so happens that would be a copy of “American Psycho” by Bret Carson Ellis and he gives his signature smile before the photo is taken.

The next night a week prior to his graduation Dexter is seen consuming his a blood rare porterhouse to which his sister Debra Morgan tells him to at least “kill the fucking cow first” and their father Harry Morgan reprimands her for cussing though she plays it off. Harry asks Dexter if there’s anything coming up this close to graduation and he says there’s some sort of party at the “Delta Alpha something” but he’s not going to go. Debra says she’ll go and Harry says Dexter should go along - that it’s good to meet people his age. This causes Debra to flip out that Dexter has to go along, feeling that his presence will ruin her good time but Harry doubles down that this is his only condition that Dexter comes along. After she storms off Harry asks Dexter how it went yesterday with the autopsy - Dr. Rivas said he did a good job but it didn’t give him the feeling he thought it would. He says he knew they both hoped slicing into bodies would be enough but…”I’m still…hungry”. Harry tells him to just stick with the plan - four more years of med school and then a residency, with plenty of time to figure all this out. Dexter interjects that he’s not sure this will satisfy his urges but a Harry tells him it has to, wanting to avoid the inevitable future of his son killing someone.

The next day Dexter heads to a job fare at the University of Miami where he walks by various booths remarking how so many hopeful people ready to start their lives - while all he wanted to do was end one. As he explores he hears a unique chuckle in the background and spots Vince Masuka at a forensics booth snapping photos of the college girls passing by. Dexter is completely enamored by the crime scene photos on display and compliments the booth, telling Masuka (who isn’t actively paying attention) that his father is in Miami Metro Homicide. Eventually he notices that two crime scene photos on opposite ends of the booth having striking similarities that suggest the same killer - Masuka acknowledges this briefly and dismisses it, then tells him to move on as he’s “cockblocking his booth”.

Later that night Dexter is in his room with a Penthouse magazine… which secretly holds an article about Ted Bundy as he remarks how at the age of 20 after so much fantasizing about it he still was a “virgin” to killing. He praised Ted Bundy for his adeptness in blending in…until he wasn’t. He follows this by wondering if he might be like him or The Night Stalker, BTK or even the Zodiac Killer. As he pondered if he would end up with a nickname too Debra barged into his room causing him to fumble and drop the magazine. Seeing that the outside presented as a porno she rolled her eyes and told him to join her in the real world where real women with “actual tits” exist, that he might even meet someone at the party. Dexter reluctantly follows Deb to the party, walking by the partygoers as she runs into her best friend Sophia. Sophia notices Dexter, looking him up and down as she asks why he's there. "Our...father made her take me"...Sophia responds "...okay" and gives Deb a look who looks at her back like he's a dweeb. After he asks what he's supposed to do Deb tells him to wait around for 2 hours and drive her home, as she walks off a pingpong ball bounces off his chest into his hand. Deciding waiting is the best option he makes his way to a nearby couch and sits - watching the party go on. At least until stoners take a seat beside him and try to offer him a rip off their bong - he gets up and makes his way through the party, pondering if this is really what Harry meant by getting to know people his age. As he moves a girl at the party grabs and kisses him, to which Dexter doesn't respond - in more ways than just not kissing back. She places a hand of his on her chest and feels down on his pants - deciding to ask if he might be gay or uninterested, to which Dexter makes up a lie about having a "girlfriend" as he continues forward.

Ironically his future girlfriend Sophia runs over to him and tells Dexter about Debra and Andy, with her being super intoxicated she's worried for her friend's safety. Dexter asks which room and rushes up the stairs, pushing people aside as he reaches the door. After knocking warrants a buzz off response from Andy, Dexter busts open the door to see Debra passed out on the bed while Andy has his pants down. Dexter, enraged, rushes Andy and puts him into a cholkhold before taking him out to the stairs where he hurls him down the stairs crashing into a wall. Dexter rushes down after him, with Andy pushing him down the next flight of stairs to the area where he just saw Sophia. As the two reach the main living room Dexter utilizes his jujutsu and takes out Andy's leg, forcing him to the ground. While Andy does kick him back briefly, Dexter overpowers him easily and lands two solid punches to his face breaking his nose and drawing a significant amount of blood. Dexter, elevated by being so close to killing someone, looks to the side of him to see a kitchen knife sitting gleaming with a light shining on it. He slowly starts reaching to it with his bloodied hand, edging closer to grabbing the knife - until his sister tackles him to the ground and snaps him out of it. He is then thrown out by someone from the party and they warn him not to come back - also to take his "slut sister" with him. Deb, who doesn't care about all that, says "the fuck Dex?" as she stumbles down the sidewalk. He says that he was trying to protect her, to which she thought it was by humiliating her but then he tells her that she was unconscious in his room. She tries to deflect by saying she had too much and needed to lie down...but comes to realize his real intent when Dexter tells her the door was locked and his pants were off. This realization has her ask the question if he had done anything...but Dex says he got there in time.

Sophia rushes down the steps worried about Deb who tells her that thanks to Dex nothing happened to her. She then takes a moment to talk to him, saying that she used to make fun of him for watching Wrestlemania all the time but what he did back there really impressed her. From that moment on she grew an intense attraction for him, despite his awkwardness. Deb starts puking which prompts Dexter to take her home, even holding her hair back one time to prevent a worse mess. When they arrive home she goes to her room to crash while Harry can be seen sitting in lighting a cigarette in the dark. He says they're way past curfew but tells them he can't sleep unless he knows his kids are home safe...which reminds him of a time when he lost his first son Harry Morgan Jr.. Dexter apologies for keeping him up, as they have to get up hunting in a few hours...so Dexter gets some sleep to be ready for the next morning.

Dexter's First Kill[]

NOTE: Section involves the lead up to disposal of Dexter’s first target. Collapsible for convenience.

In the early hours of the morning following his brawl the night before, Dexter and his father can be seen preparing their hunting gear - rifles, bowie knives, camouflage and reflective orange vests. To Dexter these trips were about bonding - and so much more...an effort to hone his instincts, to train...and work with Dexter on his urges. Dexter says that they did everything they could to control them such as the med school idea with cutting up bodies. The hunting was another way to curb the need, by killing prey it would both feed the family and channel his kills. Dexter manages to track some boar tracks...but starts to feel like this isn't helping him, especially after last night. Harry's puzzled, also having a hard time walking as he heaves along . He says that animals aren't doing it for him anymore...that he was taught the Code for a reason but what good is it if he can't do anything with it? Harry stops and goes to his son...telling him that "Killing a person...it's not that simple. Once you do it, it can't be undone."...Dexter then tells him that he almost did...kill someone, last night at the party. Harry asks about it, what happened...he says that there was this guy, he was trying to take advantage of her. He tells him that he threw him down the stairs and they hit each other - then he saw his blood. "and everything...became really clear". He talks about how he almost took a knife, that he wanted nothing more than to use it on him...but Deb stopped him...that if she hadn't been there he would have.

The story starts to have an intense effect on Harry as his breathing becomes heavy and he starts to suffer a heart attack. He grabs onto his son, falling to the ground which prompts Dexter to pick him up and carry him on his shoulders - straight to his truck and to the Angel of Mercy Hospital. As Dexter pulls up he screams to some nurses outside that they need help - which they then to proceed to wheel Harry into the hospital. One nurse in particular...Nurse Mary, approaches the gurney asking what his name is. Dexter tells her all the relevant information and Harry mumbles to him that "I'm going to be okay" over and over as Mary tells Dexter to hang back - they need room to work.

"For the first time, the idea of death became...excruciating".

Later on Deb and Dexter can be seen in the waiting room, with Dexter chowing down on a "Butterfinger" bar while Deb looks at him with disgust - asking how he can "fucking eat at a time like this?". Dexter thinks to himself that he could always eat at a time like this but puts away the bar realizing it's bothering her. As the two converse, Dexter showing that he's looking to connect with the pain Deb is feeling, Nurse Mary approaches with a tissue box for her as he informs them both that he suffered a heart attack. She says that he's currently stable and in great hands...allowing them to go see him. When both arrive, Dr. Adametta tells them that he's suffered a jnon-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, which Deb (in her own way) asks clarification on - Harry says that it means he suffered a little blockage, after a few pills he'll be out of the woods though the doctor says they'll need to hold him for testing. If all goes well he should be home by the end of the week but she does caution him to follow a strict diet..."oh, and quit fucking smoking. Excuse my French" which Deb says her French is excellent. She also tells him that he's going to want to manage stress...saying it's very important but Dexter laments in his mind that "of course...I was the stress". Later that night as Debra and Dexter ate dinner Dexter asked if she had a big regional game coming up though she didn’t think she wanted to go. Dexter encourages her though, to do it for Harry and he even says he’ll come along to the game which she has trouble believing. After she fights believing their dad will be right back in there through the same habits…they return to the hospital over the next few days as Harry’s condition failed to improve; in fact it was getting worse.

Nurse Mary would check in, injecting some chemical into Harry’s IV tube which

Trivia[]

  • Dexter seems to have quite a big appetite and fast metabolism, as most times when he is seen eating, he tucks into his food quite quickly and he tends to order a lot of food when hungry. On his double date with Debra, Gio and Sofia, he ordered a double bacon cheeseburger with fries, onion rings and a side of spicy wings and he was seen to polish all of it off with the others looking shocked.
  • Dexter was a Wrestlemania fan, which might be a loose reference to Harrison's wrestling in New Blood.
  • Dexter's biggest role model was Ted Bundy, although he also has an admiration for the Night Stalker, The Zodiac Killer and the BTK Killer.
  • Dexter also has a deep admiration for by the fictional serial killer Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. He would use Bateman's name as his very first alias.
  • One night at a college party, Dexter saved his sister Deb from being raped before he stepped in, beating up her assailant to the point he drew blood. Seeing the blood on his knuckles caused his Dark Passenger to take control as he reached for a knife to use on Deb's assailant. Deb prevented him from doing so, knocking him down to stop him.
  • Dexter was later recruited by Miami Metro's Forensics department. Even before his internship, his sharp instincts for crime scenes stood out. Masuka noticed Dexter connected two crime scene photos with a matching pattern in just seconds. Dexter had been a top student in his pre-med program, but he realized being a doctor wouldn't satisfy his need to kill.
  • At first, Dexter tried to be friendly with his coworkers by bringing a veggie platter to the office. No one cared. The next day, he brought doughnuts instead - and that became his thing. The department loved it, and he kept doing it.
