DEXTER: RESURRECTION is a Showtime television series. It is the third spin-off to follow the original series DEXTER, continuing the story of the first spinoff Dexter: New Blood. The second spinoff, a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin, begins after the ending of New Blood that ties into the beginning of Resurrection. The bulk of the series takes place 15 years prior to the original series and is narrated by a modern Dexter Morgan following a near-death experience.

Development[]

Following the release of Dexter: New Blood in 2021 that was dubbed a "second ending" for series protagonist Dexter Morgan, a return for the franchise was greenlit to include several series had previously been in development, with this series being officially announced by Paramount+ and Showtime on July 26, 2024.[2].

Set first to release would be Dexter: Original Sin, which began airing in December of 2024. The opening of the series confirmed that Dexter Morgan had survived being shot by his son Harrison Morgan in the finale of New Blood, where he's rushed to an Emergency Room and doctors are able to resuscitate him bringing on a stable heart beat. As the doctors continue to work on him he recounts the early days of his life as a serial killer, prompting the prequel series to kick off in full swing.

Along with the announcement for this series came the reveal of another Dexter project - Dexter: Resurrection which is set to release on July 11, 2025. Filming began on January 9th, 2025 and as of the third week of production several stills have been released. It would appear that Dexter is active in New York City alongside a vision of his father Harry Morgan, whom had been absent during the course of New Blood replaced instead by a vision of his daughter Debra Morgan. Additionally Harrison can be seen wandering the streets of NYC and obtains a job as a busboy at The Empire Hotel.

This is the first time in the franchise that filming has been set in New York City, with previous locations including Miami and Iron Lake. Plot details are minimal so it is unclear how Dexter avoided the investigation by Angela Bishop and assisted by Angel Batista.

Speculation[]

Given the set photos from Dexter: Resurrection it would appear that Dexter is freely walking around New York City and not necessarily on the run. This begs to question how he avoided being arrested for being the Bay Harbor Butcher, as it was indicated during the ending of New Blood. The following are theories in regard to how he could be free and is based around Dexter's own luck throughout the franchise as a whole.

  • If Resurrection takes place shortly after New Blood and there isn't a time skip due to a coma...after he recovers from surgery he is questioned by Batista, who is surprised to see he's alive. Dexter, not willing to admit to who he is foolishly as some serial killers tend to do unless evidence of his crimes were thoroughly presented by family, would continue to play ignorant to the claim that he is the Bay Harbor Butcher - as he had done during Season 7 of the original series. Batista would certainly push him for information but Dexter would find a way to re-iterate that the Butcher was in fact James Doakes. In regard to LaGuerta's investigation into him, even Batista didn't follow this up after her death...because everything she had gathered was circumstantial at best. It's possible Batista may still be suspicious of Dexter after talking but as there's literally nothing that remains to tie him to the Bay Harbor Butcher, there's nothing Batista can do if Dexter isn't going to admit to it.
  • In regard to Angela Bishop's investigation - following her discovery of Kurt Caldwell's collection of corpses and given her own sense of justice/feelings for Dexter...it's possible that she will recant her investigation after realizing the discovery of a brutal serial killer right under her nose. The issue of course is Sergeant Logan, whom Dexter had killed to escape the jail cell. It's likely that Dexter will say that Kurt Caldwell did the killing and brought Dexter with him out to the woods where Matt initially disappeared - convinced (in a psychotic state) that he had killed his son Matt Caldwell but also blaming him for ruining his 25 year ritual of killing hitch-hikers. He would then shoot Dexter and escape, according to Dexter of course...but possibly backed by Angela who chose to let Harrison go after witnessing him shoot his father. It's possible she is the one who initially saved Dexter (though unconfirmed during the opening of Original Sin, a Iron Lake police issued SUV is used to transport his body to the hospital which could be hers as it can be seen in the background when she encounters Harrison during the finale).
    • In regard to Logan, Harrison tells her that his father killed Coach Logan. She says "I know" before she allows him to go free. So the claim that Logan was killed by Kurt would be his word vs. hers...unless she has a change of heart given what she saw at the cabin and her choice to save Dexter's life vs. leaving him to bleed out in the snow.
  • If Resurrection takes place in 2025 (to match with the current year as the original series did), then it's possible he was either in a coma from the gunshot (which would allow make Original Sin something of a comatose recollection of his life while in the Coma and can even continue for multiple seasons if that's the case) or he recovered and then the story picks up a few years later so he's in New York. Why is he in New York City? Possibly in search of his son, Harrison...now with a free pass on life he can start again freely (though it's possible Batista is keeping an eye on him). Harry's returned by his side, possibly showing he's also going to continue his work as a serial killer once more...and NYC is an ocean-side city with plenty of area to dispose of bodies...he could easily resume his Bay Harbor Butcher ways there.
  • In regard to law enforcement and his potential return to being a Blood Spatter Analyst...if for some reason he's cleared of everything and Batista recommends it (maybe just genuinely believing in Dexter as he has done many times before)...it could be he's set up with a new career in New York to allow him to return to his old work.
  • While unlikely given Batista's moral compass...if the truth is revealed to Batista back at the hospital and he realizes he's the Bay Harbor Butcher...he may see merit in a vigilante such as him taking care of these monsters that evade the police, possibly hinting that through his experiences over the years he's become more like Harry than he originally would have thought. Perhaps Dexter brings up Tony Ferrer...and several other killers to give Batista something to think about...and he decides to let him go. Of course the question of LaGuerta comes to mind but it's possible that Dexter will still use the original narrative that Hector Estrada was the one to kill her. Given his prominence in Original Sin...it's possible that Batista would be more aware of Estrada for Resurrection as elements from that series can retroactively make their way into the modern show and believe it when Dexter says he was responsible. In reality Dexter didn't kill her...it was Debra but Dexter likely would not sell his sister out as the culprit (and Batista would probably get mad...saying he's dishonoring her memory to even suggest that).
