Summary[]
Dexter does chores around the property, which is located next to a forest. Dexter marks off days on a calendar, signifying that he resisted the urge to kill. Dexter later brings his son Harrison home, after convincing him to come back from the bus station.
The cabin serves as home base in the police search for the missing Matt Caldwell, with the police not suspecting that Dexter buried the man's body right beneath that aforementioned fire-pit.
From his porch, Dexter watches the search party cooking breakfast at his firepit. They are unaware that Matt Caldwell is literally buried under their feet. Dexter needs to find a way to get everyone off his land so he can be a "proper dad" to his son. He finds Harrison flying a drone with Sergeant Logan and reminds him that they're meeting with the school principal since it's his first day.. Logan, the high school assistant coach, suggests that Harrison try out for wrestling, describing it as a great sport that teaches personal growth, confidence, and mental toughness. Harrison agrees to consider it.
Photos are strewn on the floor of Dexter’s cabin. In his head, Dexter debates with Deb about Kurt’s true intentions behind saying his son is alive. Dexter suggests it’s a delusion, but Deb says Kurt is lying. She theorizes it’s because he wants Angela to close the case so that he can kill Johnny Bullhorn later on because he thinks Johnny murdered Matt for killing the deer. Deb adds that Kurt might then realize his error and find his way to Matt’s real killer - Dexter.
When Harrison asks Dexter how he deals with scary situations, Dexter thinks “I wrap bad guys in plastic and kill them” however he tells Harrison “I’m not sure.” Harrison seems disappointed by the response.
In the morning, while Dexter changes Harrison’s bandage, he asks about the attack but Harrison gets defensive, saying he can’t remember all the details such as which hand he held the knife in. He asks why Dexter is “interrogating” him and Dexter says it’s just his “old forensic brain.” Annoyed, Harrison takes his backpack and leaves.
Dexter tells Deb something’s off because the stab wound doesn’t match the story Harrison told. Deb disagrees and tells Dexter that he’s the one that is “off.”
Dexter makes breakfast. As Harrison gobbles the food, Dexter thinks, “He even eats like me.” Dexter suggests that Harrison stay home from school but Harrison wants to get back into a routine. Dexter remarks that he totally gets that. When Dexter asks Harrison if he noticed anything going on with Ethan before that day, Harrison retorts that he didn’t know anything until Ethan got him alone at school.
Kurt Caldwell knocks at Jim's (Dexter) door. Kurt says he wants to shake Harrison’s hand to thank him personally for keeping the town safe. He gives an Harrison a drone as a gift before he leaves for school.
Kurt tells Jim he’s lucky to have a hero for a son and admits he didn’t do a great job raising Matt, whom he calls a “fuck-up.” Dexter accidentally reveals that he knows about the boat accident from Angela and Esther. Kurt immediately states that Matt wasn’t driving. As Kurt leaves, Dexter thinks, “That guy’s fishing and I just nibbled.”
Dexter picks through Harrison’s things, looking for any troubling signs. He finds a straight razor hidden inside a flashlight. Deb sobs in the background, saying that Harrison was “born in blood.” Dexter thinks that Harrison has his Dark Passenger and inherited his behaviors. He stares at the razor, then holds it to his lips.

As Dexter looks at the straight razor that Harrison used to cut Ethan, there is a flashback of Rita bleeding to death in a tub. Deb wonders if Harrison remembers it but Dexter says he can’t. Deb reminds him that he remembered when drug dealers dismembered his mother inside a shipping container, Dexter says, “That was different.” She says that she wants to help Harrison not become like Dexter, adding that what Harry did to him was child abuse - teaching him to become a serial killer and how to get away with it.. Dexter answers that he wants to guide Harrison through this and be honest. However Deb insists that he cannot tell his son who he is and calls Dexter a monster.
Harrison walks into the cabin to see Dexter holding the razor he found in his room. Harrison claims he only carries it for protection. Dexter tells Harrison that he heard Ethan’s side of the story and that it’s a lot different from his version. Dexter tells Harrison he can tell him if he did it on purpose. Harrison is offended that Dexter doesn’t believe him and storms out, retorting, “You are the one telling a lie…Jim.”
As Harrison is sitting on the porch, Zach drives up and tells him he’s right about them being dicks. He tells Harrison to come to a party that night where he is the guest of honor. Scott throws him a beer and Harrison gets in the car.
Harrison chops wood and does chores around the house. Deb tells Dexter she’s proud of him. Dexter expresses doubts about Harrison working for the father of one of his victims. Harrison comes in and thanks Dexter for the place to stay. They talk about the job and Dexter expresses doubts about Kurt. Harrison asks for his signature on the job application but Dexter tells him sorry no. Harrison tells him he didn’t go to therapy the night before but talked to Kurt and that Dexter should be thanking him.
The cabin is shown on fire, burning to the ground after having been torched by Kurt Caldwell.
The cabin is now a crime scene. People from the town help Jim (Dexter) sift through his burned belongings. Teddy Reed finds Dexter's watch (formerly Harry's) and returns it to him. A few Iron Lake High School wrestlers, Tess, and Sergeant Logan come by with donated clothes and a new wrestling jacket for Harrison.
Angela Bishop is shocked to find a medical screw in the rubble of the cabin.
Quotes[]
- Ah, wilderness. Snow. Ice. Privacy. Well, maybe not so much privacy. I've got a search party all over my property looking for someone who's literally under their feet. All because I made one tiny mistake and killed someone. Now I need to search for a way to get everyone off my land so I can be a proper dad for my son. - Dexter narrating ("Smoke Signals")
Trivia[]
- It is an actual log cabin, which was built especially for the production, but was torn down at the end of filming. It was built on the western banks of Lake Wampanoag, just north of a place named Camp Collier, in Gardner, Massachusetts (although the area sometimes maps as Ashburnham, MA).
