Clark Sanders is a character in the Showtime series Dexter: Original Sin.

He is a police officer connected to Miami Metro Homicide, present at various homicide scenes throughout the series.

Background[]

When Clark was 14 years old he watched his brother catch a stray bullet outside their house while riding his bike. Seeing his brother killed motivated him into becoming a police officer with the goal of becoming a Detective. Prior to his meeting with Dexter he had worked his way into the Homicide department, having a desk that sits across from Sergeant Harry Morgan.

Summary[]

Sanders can be seen taking notes as he observes the crime scene for the Shapiro Family Murder, kneeling over the body of Mrs. Shapiro alongside Detective Angel Batista. After Captain Aaron Spencer arrives to find the family dead, he gets the reports from the other detectives on scene including Bobby Watt, Batista and Sergeant Harry Morgan. Dissatisfied with the results, Spencer asks for something concrete and Harry asks Sanders if the TV was on when they arrived on scene. He remarks no, that it was off and watches as Harry discovers a remote with blood on it which is later logged into evidence and used to facilitate the arrest of suspect Levi Reed.

A week later following Harry's heart attack that left him in the hospital his son Dexter Morgan returns home after having successfully disposed of Nurse Mary's body. As he pulls up to the stop sign around the corner from the house Clark can be seen in the driver's seat of a patrol car noticing him, watching him through the side mirror. The cops were at Harry's house along with detectives and Captain Spencer to drop off food in support of Harry's family. It's possible Clark also brought something but it isn't shown. He later appears in his desk at Miami Metro Homicide standing up to greet Harry once he returns to work, the two holding a firm handshake.

In the early morning joggers stumble across the hanging body of Jimmy Powell, calling it into the police. Clark is on the scene, trying to hold back the press and crowd of spectators trying to push through. With the chaotic crime scene Dexter arrives with the other forensics team but is locked inside his head, completely unnerved by the sight of a dead child. During an argument between Spencer and Detective Maria LaGuerta he orders that she go to a crime scene at Coconut Grove, a body found at the Alice Wainwright Park (also known as the "Prostitute Park"). Despite her disagreements she is told to go with Clark and Harry later makes use of him to take Dexter along, noticing as they move under the caution tape his physical state as he's reeling. Before arriving at the scene he asks him about it, how it must be tough seeing a kid like that.

Description[]

Clark is an African-American male in his 20's with short hair and a mustache. He is often seen wearing the standard issue Miami Metro Police Department uniform though he is present on Homicide scenes alongside Detectives and the Forensics department. It's possible he may be forgoing the use of a suit as Debra Morgan would wear one prior to earning her Detective's shield.

Personality[]

Clark appears to have a good moral character, wishing to reach out to his fellow officers or even forensic people in need as a supportive figure in their lives. He was driven to become a cop following the death of his brother at a young age, ultimately wanting to become a detective himself. He's seen enough in his time to know that bottling up your feelings in this line of work could spill out in other ways - drugs, alcohol, even violence. He offers the chance to talk with them instead, letting them lighten the burden, showing that he can hear them out. When he first really gets to meet Dexter during a car ride he opens up a bit about this and it can encourage Dexter to be back in the right mindset for the crime scene they're about to enter together.

Notes[]

  • Clark has a desk inside the Homicide Department though he holds the rank of Officer, similar to Debra Morgan in the original series. However, unlike others in the department, he chooses to remain in his standard-issue cop uniform.
  • Clark's desk sits across from Harry's (which would eventually become Sergeant James Doakes's), near the door on the right side. By the time of Season Two the desk appears to belong to Sergeant Lee, who has it facing the opposite direction.
  • Clark is one of the first people to reach out to Dexter trying to connect with whatever he's going through. After Dexter starts to lock up at the Jimmy Powell scene Clark relates to Dexter with a story about a kid who got shot by a stray bullet (this would later turn out to be his brother) and lets Dexter know that if he needs to talk about what he's going through he's there to talk. He understands that cops take the job in various ways drinking, drugs, and even violence but he offers a supportive position to help talk through things.
