Smith grew up in Orange Park, Florida. She is married to actor John Fortson, and they have two children, her daughter Abby Ryder Forston, known for her role as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), and her son Joshua. They live in California.
