Black Bear is an animal character in the Showtime special event series Dexter: New Blood with whom Dexter has a close encounter.
Summary[]
Dexter has temporarily buried Matt Caldwell's body under his fire pit. However, when a search party that is looking for Matt sets up camp outside his cabin, he is desperate to move the remains, especially when he learns that dogs will be brought in.
Deb and Dexter discuss ways to dispose of Matt's body as they sit in his truck outside the school. Every place has drawbacks and she eventually suggests using a woodchipper which culminates in an imagined bloody scene. She is dubious when Dexter vows that he will never murder anyone again.
Dexter can't bury Matt in the frozen ground or dump him in the iced-over lake so he looks for another option. With no customers in the store, he scrutinizes a map of the area. Fuck. So, Matt, once again... what to do with you. The old iron mine. It's remote, plenty big. Filled with tunnels. Goldilocks, I think it's just right. He obtains permission from his boss to join the search for Matt, but heads to the iron mine.
Dexter drives as far as he can, then dons snow shoes, grabs his ski poles and backpack for the three-mile hike up to the iron mine.
Dexter reaches the iron mine’s entrance, goes inside, and turns on a headlamp. As he walks through the dismal tunnel, he nearly falls into a deep pit. To assess its depth, Dexter drops a rock into the pit and it thuds faintly.
Suddenly, a black bear appears, growling and roaring. Dexter swears, races out of the mine, and collapses on the snow. While he's lying there, Angela calls to invite him to dinner. He begs off due to exhaustion until she mentions that her daughter invited Harrison. Dexter mouths the word "FUCK" and says he'd love to come.
Dexter later tosses Matt's remains into the Iron Lake Sanitation Incinerator. However, the titanium medical screws in his leg are not burnt.

Black Bear Trivia[]
- Bears hibernate during winter, but aren't sleeping the whole time.
- Black bears hibernate for 5-8 months, during which time they don't eat, drink, and rarely urinate or defecate. Hibernation is also known as denning, torpor, and carnivore lethargy. During hibernation, black bears reduce their metabolic rate to 25% of their basal rate, and regulate their body temperature from 30° to 36°C.
- Bears can also come out of hibernation if they are disturbed. Unlike other animals, bears do not slowly awaken from hibernation. So, if disturbed by loud noises or approaching danger, they can immediately wake up to defend themselves or their cubs.
- Females typically hibernate longer than males. Males bed down around mid-December and emerge in mid-March; females, which give birth during the winter and stay with their cubs for two years, remain in their dens longer, from late November to mid-April.
- Most fatal attacks took place during August, when black bears search for high-energy foods in preparation for hibernation. August also happens to be a popular time of year for hiking, which leads to a higher chance of human-bear interactions.
