After Laguerta’s funeral (She was killed by Brian in Darkly Dreaming Dexter) he becomes incredibly enraged to the point he starts tailing Dexter in hopes of finding out what he does since Dexter repeatedly cut work short in the recent events after Darkly Dreaming Dexter. To which Dexter goes and uses Rita to disguise himself from Doakes suspicions for a short period before putting himself on the case when Deborah starts investigating Dr.Danco.
After a relentless chase through the desolate streets of Miami, Doakes cornered Dexter Morgan in an abandoned factory. Fueled by fury and the unrelenting drive of his own dark passenger, Doakes unleashed a brutal assault on Dexter. In the ensuing fight, Doakes demonstrated almost inhuman strength, landing a devastating punch that sent Dexter flying across the room and cracking his ribs. The impact left Dexter writhing in pain, but Doakes was far from done. One wild punch missed its mark, shattering a concrete wall and leaving a gaping hole, further proving the sheer force behind his attacks.
Though battered and broken, Dexter managed to slip away when Doakes began to tire. Seething with frustration, Doakes retrieved his phone to call for backup, only to feel the sharp sting of two M99 tranquilizer darts embedding into his back. Staggering, Doakes turned to see Dr. Danco emerge from the shadows, the same figure of chaos and cruelty he had been pursuing.
Summoning the last of his strength, Doakes lunged at Danco, landing a single, bone-crushing punch that briefly staggered the sadistic doctor. But the tranquilizer took hold, and Doakes collapsed.
Although he survives an encounter with Dr. Danco, he is partially dismembered, including having his tongue cut out.
